Silver Walk The Silver Walk will allow you to acquaint yourself with Schoonhoven’s silver. The walk (approx. 1 hour) takes you along the most important places of interest and monuments of the town. There are also many galleries along the way during this walk! The Silver Walk is outlined in the Schoonhoven town guide, go to the VVV Tourist Information Office in Schoonhoven for more information.
Museums Silver objects of then and now are exhibited in the Dutch Gold, Silver and Clock Museum. In the Clock Room of this museum, you can find out everything about the development of measuring time and timepieces throughout the centuries. In the Edelambachtshuys, situated in a former synagogue, you can enjoy Schoonhoven’s antique silver from the 16th century in the museum gallery, a silversmiths and a collection of silver jewellery and objects from both home and abroad. In short, these are museums with unique characters.
Galleries Schoonhoven has more than 20 silver shops or galleries. A nice idea would be to attend a workshop (at the silversmiths), during which you could create your own silver jewellery. During the Cultural Sundays in the spring and autumn, amongst other things, these galleries and the galleries of the visual artists are open to the public the entire afternoon.
Culinary A lovely thing to do on a summer’s day is to sit at one of the terraces of the restaurants on the banks of the Lek river and to watch the continually-changing river panorama, or to settle down at a street cafe in the historic town centre. You can also take a culinary walk through Schoonhoven (tasteful silver) through the town centre. Click on “arrangements” for more information. If you have not bought a “fonteynkoeck”, you have not been to Schoonhoven! This spiced gingerbread, made of wheat and rye flower, honey, sugar, spices and subtropical fruits, was discovered in the 17th century by the baker, Koster, who had a bakery in the Fonteynsteeg – hence the name of the gingerbread. The gingerbread is still baked according to the old recipe.
Schoonhoven glitters! Each year, many organisations work towards organising fun events for the inhabitants and visitors of Schoonhoven. Every month, there is something to do in the town. The highlights are the National Silver Day and the Cultural Sundays.
Souvenirs You can buy beautiful silverware at the VVV Tourist Information Office shops, for example, jewellery, teaspoons and various useful gadgets. These are nice as presents for yourself or for others!
Group excursions The centre of Schoonhoven is exceptionally suitable for group visits. In the free folder, “Group Packages in The Green Heart”, there are “ready made” programmes, such as “Schoonhoven Silver Town” and “Through the Alblasserwaard with a tilt car”, “Silver and Cheese”, “Workshops with the Silversmith”.
